Authorities in New Delhi, the capital of India, have declared an emergency due to alarming pollution levels affecting the city. As part of the measures taken, in-person classes have been suspended in all educational institutions, and the public has been urged to stay at home.

According to an IQAir report, New Delhi has reached an air quality index (AQI) of 1,049, classified as extremely dangerous. Any figure above 300 is considered highly harmful to citizens’ health.

Atishi Marlena, the Chief Minister of Delhi, announced on her social media that classes will be conducted virtually in response to this environmental crisis.

The official indicated that the current situation is a result of stubble burning in various regions of the country, which has significantly deteriorated air quality not only in the capital but also in other areas, especially in northern India.

The pollution crisis has also impacted Pakistan, where Punjab province, bordering India, reported an AQI of 1,110 on November 14, according to IQAir.

In response, Punjab has begun implementing restrictions to protect its population. With a population nearing 32 million, New Delhi is the most populous city in India and one of the most densely populated in the world.

Authorities continue to assess the situation and take additional measures to mitigate the impact of pollution on public health.
